We reported this morning that Gaia Gold would be announcing an app on Facebook tomorrow, but we spoke to CEO Craig Sherman today about his larger plans. "There are two elements," said Sherman. "One is the idea that you can transform a flat, HTML website like Facebook into a place with a tool like the one we've produced. The second is that it's actually a platform that extends across all social netorks, starting with Facebook and Bebo today. You'll be able to go into this virtual space today and hang out with your Facebook friends and people on Bebo and people on Gaia Gold simultaneously. We intend to extend that across other social networks so that we become the platform that ties people together."
Currently Gaia Gold is only on two social networks, Gaia Gold and now Facebook, but it offers a unique way to tie them together. Users can enter the virtual world from its main website or either of the virtual worlds, but then they're all in the same place. And that world is growing.
With platforms like Google's OpenSocial looking to make it easy to integrate content across social networks (Bebo is a part of the group), it shouldn't be hard to tie all the networks together with a virtual place. Sherman said that he definitely had eyes on OpenSocial, but so far he hasn't announced any other networks. His plans, though, are clearer: Gaia has a strong user base, Bebo has an even larger base, Facebook has an even larger base, and a network of all the other social networks, including MySpace, would have the largest user base. Now all of Facebook's users can access Gaia Online. It seems like it's only a matter of time before the virtual world appears on the others.
"We're really excited," said Sherman. "We launched on Bebo and had tremendous success. It can be much bigger on a platform like Facebook. We'll be social network agnostic and extend our network across multiple networks. From a user perspective it'll be the same, no matter what network they are using."
While other immersive virtual worlds haven't had as much success with social networks, Sherman says that Gaia's success is due in part to its light weight nature.
